A Structured Approach to Learning Guitar

With so much material for learning guitar online, it can be hard to know what’s best to focus on at each stage of your journey.

If the level of challenge is higher than your experience, you can end up being discouraged. It can sometimes feel like it all seems impossible!

That’s why I work with a clear and simple system of levels to guide students through guitar proficiency. I’ve based the levels on the achievement of specific skills. This way you get just the right degree of challenge at each stage of the learning process. You know what you’re working towards, and you choose to go up to the next level when you feel ready. And when that time comes, you always know what the next step will be!

Skill levels go from A1 to C2:

Complete Courses That Match Your Interests

Everyone’s tastes and musical inspiration is different. Not everybody dreams of learning bluegrass, jazz or heavy metal!

That’s why I offer a variety of courses following different paths in learning guitar – both song based and technique based. That way, you can learn the kind of music that inspires you to pick up the guitar, in whatever learning style works for you.

Song based courses introduce you to all the crucial skills and techniques in the context of learning full songs, with gradually increasing difficulty. Yes, that’s full songs, from the very start – because playing a song from beginning to end is much more satisfying than just a 10 second riff!

Technique based courses introduce you to the nuts and bolts of guitar playing from a practical perspective. This includes practice routines, the language of music such as scales, modes, chords and arpeggios, as well as songwriting and improvisation.

The courses start from A1 ‘absolute beginner’ all the way up to intermediate and advanced, in genres ranging from stadium rock to alt rock, from blues, funk and jazz to improvisation and theory, from classical to folk, fingerstyle and more!

I’ve got my partner a guitar lesson from Rory as a Christmas gift. This was two years ago and he still takes lessons every week. He’s been progressing nicely on the acoustic and electric guitar. Rory exceeded my expectations, he is a very positive and engaging person. Also amazing to see his live performance with his band The Eerie. Definitely the best Christmas present I’ve given my partner.

Highly recommend Rory for guitar lessons. He is a fantastic teacher, very patient and engaging, and every lesson is enjoyable. He has an amazing ability to break songs down and explain things in a way that will have you playing songs you thought were beyond reach in no time. Every lesson is rewarding and you come away feeling motivated to continue improving and practicing. My only regret is not signing up sooner!

Rory is an exceptional guitar teacher. I’m not exactly a young learner but his patient and ever helpful encouragement has made all of the difference to my playing. I had teachers before meeting Rory and never made much progress. Rory carefully explains how songs work, the rhythm and timing you need to focus on, and tips to making chord changes, for instance, easier. I have a mix of online and face-to-face lessons and both work well for me. Frankly, without Rory I’d have given up ages ago.

Rory has been teaching me bass guitar for the last three years. I always come away so surprised that I can actually play what I want to play, even if it feels really complicated at the start!

He's really good at breaking things down into manageable chunks and has endless patience for going over anything I might be confused about. We've done all sorts from Pink Floyd to Bowie to Led Zeppelin and more recently I've been dipping my toes into odd time signatures and improvisation.

I was self-taught before, but since picking up lessons with Rory I feel like my bass playing has come on leaps and bounds. I'm so much more confident playing live and at jam sessions. 100% recommend!

Rory has been teaching my daughter and me guitar and ukelele from scratch. We both enjoy it and are making good progress. Rory works with songs we like and we can even suggest songs to learn and he will translate them to our level for both guitar and ukelele, which keeps it fun. I would happely recommend Rory to anyone who wants to learn to play.

Rory is an incredible guitar teacher, and has taught me so much since I started with him last year. Super patient, and every lesson with him is fun and focused, and leaves me me feeling motivated to practice every week. Could not reccommend enough!

Rory is an outstanding teacher, his passion for music is infectious. Lesson by lesson he finds ways of making the impossible for you possible, constantly reminding that practice makes perfect, but when the lessons and the homework are as enjoyable, accessible and easy as the way he lays it out, makes it all the more fun. Highly recommended.
